Dr. Jane Helm Maddock was a Professor of English at the University of Montana Western for 17 years, and the award named in her honor is given to those who have performed extraordinary service to the campus and community. This year, the alumni office also recognized two Montana Western students for their service work.
Darrin Morast was raised in Sidney, Mont. and received his Social Science Broadfield Degree from Montana Western in 1994. He is the current chief of the Dillon Volunteer Fire Department and has been a coach for the Dillon Football League, the Western Basketball League, and youth travel basketball. Morast was instrumental in assisting the Dillon Cubs build their new field and facilities. He is also a gifted wood and metal worker and has donated many pieces of his work to Bulldog and community fundraisers. He recently helped establish the Engine 18 scholarship for Montana Western football players.
Kirsten Love was born in Dillon, Mont. and attended Montana Western from 1988 to 1991. She is a past member of the Dillon Jaycee Auxiliary where she held several offices and helped with many community service projects. She has been involved with the Chamber of Commerce, Business Builders, Festival of Trees, Booster Bash, The Park Project, and the Montana Mainstreet Organization. In addition, she has volunteered time and effort to Beaverhead Little League, Little Guy Wrestling, and the Youth Connections Mentoring Program.
Montana Western student Caitlyn Corso has volunteered for the Bicentennial Assisted Living Community and the Women’s Resource Community Support Center along with working as a tutor in the University of Montana Western Learning Center. She has also been a volunteer teaching assistant at Dillon Middle School and spent three years working in the Serving and Volunteering Youth (SAVY) program, serving as a junior cheer coach and advisor. She was recognized during the Dr. Jane Helm Maddock Service Awards in honor of receiving the 2018 Newman Civic Award.
Katlyn Skauge is a TRIO mentor, middle school girls’ basketball coach, and a tutor for the Homework Help Center at Dillon Middle School. She received the Chancellor’s Leadership Scholarship in 2015 from the University of Montana Western and has volunteered as a teacher’s assistant for the Dillon Middle School and Parkview Elementary. She was honored with the Dr. Jane Helm Maddock Student Service Award.
