Sandra (Sandi) J. Sloan

Sandra “Sandi” J. Sloan is being recognized with the Dr. Jane Helm Maddock Service Award for her longstanding commitment to strengthening families and communities in Beaverhead County.

Originally from Wisconsin, Sloan moved to Montana while working for the U.S. Forest Service during college and later made Dillon her home. She earned her undergraduate degree in sociology from the University of Montana Western and later completed a master’s degree in mental health and rehabilitation from Montana State University Billings.

Sloan spent many years working with Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch through its CSCT school programs, supporting students facing behavioral and emotional challenges and helping them succeed in school, at home, and in their communities. Through this work, she developed a deep understanding of the challenges families face and the importance of strong community support systems.

In addition to her professional work, Sloan has been a dedicated advocate for students at Montana Western. She has worked closely with the Sloan Family Foundation to help identify and support students with financial need, ensuring they have access to the resources necessary to persist and succeed. Recognizing the growing importance of mental health, she has also been a strong supporter of counseling services on campus, championing efforts to promote student well-being.

Today, Sloan continues to serve the Dillon community through extensive volunteer leadership. She has been involved with numerous organizations, including serving as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children in the foster care system for more than a decade. Her community involvement has also included leadership roles with the YMCA, United Way, the Women’s Resource Center, the Sloan Family Foundation Education Board, and local efforts addressing adverse childhood experiences.

In recognition of her dedication to service, Sloan has received honors including the 406 Be The Change Award and the Mental Health Intern Service Award from MSU Billings.

Through her work with students, families, and community organizations, Sloan has made a lasting impact in Dillon and continues to champion initiatives that promote healthier families, stronger communities, and greater opportunity for future generations.

Charlene Loge

Charlene Loge has devoted decades of service to the Dillon community through music, education, civic engagement, and a deep commitment to the success of Montana Western and its students.

Born at the Fort Belknap Indian Health Service Hospital and raised in Harlem, Montana, Loge developed an early love of music, studying piano and performing throughout her school years. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Montana and later completed a Master of Library Science from The Catholic University of America.

After moving to Dillon in 1980, Loge became deeply involved in both the community and Montana Western. She served the university in a variety of roles, including as an adjunct faculty member teaching courses in library reference services, history and philosophy of science, music for elementary teachers, and piano instruction. She also served as interim library director and contributed her time to campus committees and academic initiatives. As a member of the University of Montana Western Foundation Board, she provided leadership and advocacy in support of the university’s growth and long-term success.

In the Dillon community, Loge has taught piano lessons for more than forty years, mentoring generations of students and helping many prepare for competitions and performances. Her passion for music has extended into countless volunteer roles, including accompanying church choirs, school music programs, and community performances.

She has also contributed her time and leadership to numerous organizations, including the Dillon Presbyterian Church, the Dillon Public Library Board, the Beaverhead County Museum Board, and the Montana Committee for the Humanities. She also served on the District 10 Elementary School Board and the University of Montana Western Foundation Board, as well as a wide range of community initiatives supporting families, education, and the arts.

A longtime member of the Montana State Music Teachers Association and the Dillon Concert Association, Loge continues to promote music and the arts in Southwest Montana. Her contributions have been recognized with honors including the Jaycee Women Young Woman of the Year Award, the Margaret Hagenbarth Award for Contributions to the Arts, and the Montana State Music Teachers Association Music Teacher of the Year.

Charlene and her husband, Dr. Rob Loge, raised two daughters: Dr. Anna Loge, a physician in Dillon, and Laura Loge, a singer and music program artistic director. Music and education have long been central to the family’s life and contributions to the arts.

In recognition of her lifelong dedication to education, music, community service, and her enduring impact on Montana Western, Charlene Loge is honored with the 2026 Dr. Jane Helm Maddock Service Award.
