The University of Montana Western will celebrate its 129th Annual Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in Bulldog Stadium on the UMW campus.

The University of Montana Western’s P.A.T.H. (Peers Advocating Towards Health) and the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) invite the campus and local communities to participate in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes on Thursday, April 30, at 3:30 p.m. at the Roe House on the UMW campus.

The University of Montana Western has established the KG Environmental Sustainability Action Scholarship in memory of Kimberly “KG” Giannone, honoring her commitment to environmental action, hard work, and science communication.

The University of Montana Western, in partnership with the International Block and Intensive Learning and Teaching Association (IBILTA), is pleased to invite attendees and presenters from around the world to the IBILTA 2026 International Conference, a fully virtual event bringing together educators, researchers, and practitioners to explore innovative approaches to learning and teaching. The conference will take place September 29–30, 2026.

University of Montana Western professor Dr. Spruce Schoenemann has led a team of researchers that has uncovered new details about one of the most abrupt climate events of the last 12,000 years. The study, recently published in "Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology", focuses on the 8.2 ka Event, a sudden cooling that occurred roughly 8,200 years ago during the final stages of the last major ice age.

The University of Montana Western Fine Arts Gallery is honored to present “Forget Me Not,” a film installation by Montana-based artist and educator Cindy Stillwell. A professor of film at Montana State University whose work has screened internationally, including at Sundance and the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Stillwell is known for her richly textured films created using 16mm and Super 8 formats. The exhibition will open on Friday, February 27 and will feature an opening reception from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery located in Main Hall.

Montana Western Athletics, in collaboration with the UMW Foundation and Alumni Office, is excited to announce the 2025 Bulldog Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which will honor Kyle Rausch (Football), Jack Filcher (Track), Jenny Peterson (Coach), and the 2002 Bulldog Volleyball Team. This year’s event will be part of Montana Western Alumni Weekend.

University of Montana Western student Victoria Pehlke has been awarded a Sigma Tau Delta scholarship in recognition of her academic achievements and dedication to writing. The scholarship honors students who demonstrate excellence in English studies and contribute actively to their campus communities.

The University of Montana Western Fine Arts Gallery is honored to present “The Indigenous Salish of Central and Western Montana Lifeways and Perspectives” by Salish artist, archaeologist, and Salish Kootenai College professor Tim Ryan. The exhibition opens Friday, September 5, and will feature a gallery reception and artist talk from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery, located in Main Hall. The Beaverhead County Museum will also host a public presentation by Tim on September 4 at the Old Depot Theatre at 6:30 p.m.

The University of Montana Western’s History and Environmental Science Departments will host Dr. Will Munger as part of the “On the Rocks” lecture series. Dr. Munger will present “Working Across the High Divide: Learning from the Histories of Sheep Herders, Range Riders, and Indigenous Elders About the Future of Conservation” on Friday, September 5, from 11:20 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. in UMW's Lucy Carson Library.

Dr. Kyle Richardson, Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of Montana Western, has received a $350,721 grant from the National Science Foundation to investigate lesser-known environmental transmission pathways of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Montana’s wild cervid populations.

Nicolas “Cole” Johnston, a graduate of Beaverhead High School and UMW Class of 2025, will begin Ph.D. research in human genetics this fall through the University of Iowa’s Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Genetics. His path to doctorate-level biomedical research began after transferring from engineering at Montana Tech to join the UMW biology program. Inspired by UMW’s block schedule and immersive, discipline-specific practices, Cole developed a true passion for learning and a drive to excel.
