Bio of Frank Simon Jr.

Born in Butte on Nov. 22, 1955, Frank attended Longfellow Elementary School and graduated from Butte High School in 1974. He studied at Montana Tech and Montana State University, where in 1983 he received a bachelor's degree in education. But his schooling did not end there. Western Montana College awarded Frank a master's degree in education, then began working on his doctorate. In his youth, Frank was known for his expert marksmanship on the shooting range, for which he won several awards, as well as for his considerable musical gifts. But never was his aim more true than when he fell in love with Ellen Jean Dobb. The couple wed in 1982. Creating things is what Frank did best. As skillful with a saw or plane as he was with a rifle or guitar, he was a builder, a fixer, a doer who could not stand to be idle. Frank taught industrial arts education at Western Montana College. And there, as was the case in all his classrooms, his ambition was not only to educate but to help mold the character of young people. He was a patient, humble, generous teacher who instructed by example. Frank E. Simon Jr. died June 28, 2001 after a valiant struggle with cancer.
