Dr. Jane Helm Maddock was a Professor of English at the University of Montana Western for 17 years. The award is named in her honor and given to those who have performed extraordinary service to the campus and community.
Lynn Welzien created the Campus Counseling Program at Montana Western in 1992 and continued to lead the program until her retirement in 2016. She designed numerous health promotion campaigns and advocated tirelessly for the students, staff and faculty at UMW.
Welzien was influential in making Montana Western a tobacco free campus in 2012. In addition to her service at Montana Western, Welzien has used her energy, vision and networking skills to promote and advocate for mental health care in the community of Dillon.
It is an honor to award Weltzien the Dr. Jane Helm Maddock Service Award for 2019 because of her leadership and dedication to the UMW campus and community of Beaverhead County.
Mary Jo O’Rourke
Mary Jo O’Rourke moved to Dillon, Mont. in 1978 with her husband George Johnston. In the mid-1980’s, O’Rourke collaborated with local residents and worked to “save our college,” before Montana Western was established with the University of Montana System.
O’Rourke helped establish the Women’s Resource Center, served on the Beaverhead County Museum Association Board and the local Tree Board where she co-wrote and was awarded a $10,000 grant for the City of Dillon. She has also served on the Vestry for the St. James Episcopal Church and Community Thanksgiving Dinner Committee.
Her list of service includes many non-profit and volunteer organizations. Currently, O’Rourke serves as a member of the Dillon City Council. O’Rourke’s years of dedicated service to UMW and the community of Dillon make her a deserving winner of the Dr. Jane Helm Maddock Service Award.
Three UMW students will be acknowledged during the award dinner as well this year. Adrianna Pittman will be recognized for being named a 2019 Newman Civic fellow. Fallon Horrocks and Sara Woomer will be given the Dr. Jane Helm Maddock Student Service Award.
