A Montana Summer Tradition Returns: The Fifth Annual Beaverhead Treasure Hunt is On!

This beloved geo-tourism event has become a regional favorite — and for good reason. This year’s hidden treasures are more stunning than ever: approximately 200 hand-crafted Montana Stepping Stoneseach a unique and colorful piece created by Montana Western student artists crafted in the artistic vision of Associate Professor of Fine Arts and Glass Program Coordinator, Ruth King. Each stone is a one-of-a-kind, individually numbered work of art and a tribute to the creative spirit of Beaverhead County.

“I’ve loved each year’s glass treasure pieces that our students and program have produced, but this year’s work is my absolute favorite so far,” said King. “We’re treating them as an artistic series, based on my own artistic practice with glass over the years, which is why each one is individually numbered in addition to being stamped with a W for Western on the bottom of each piece. No two are the same, but they all go together.”

The primary Montana Western student and alumni contributors include Joshua Jarvis, BA Glass 2025, and Ella Stoddard, Glass BA Major and Glass Club President.

“I’m thrilled to continue this exciting and fun tradition for the fifth year in our county. I’ve really enjoyed helping to spread the word around the state about how this event brings adventure and joy to visitors and locals alike, as they visit points of interest and local businesses throughout Beaverhead County. I’d like to thank Ruth King and her incredible students, Roxanne Engellant and the Montana Western Foundation, and Matt Raffety and the UMW Communications Office for their continued support of this event,” said Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Rebecca Jones.
